ABOUT SKIN LESIONS
Skin lesions of any kind can cause you to ponder your risk of skin cancer. Men and women from Tampa and surrounding areas such as Channel side, Hyde Park, West Shore, and beyond may feel a little more concerned than most due to the prevalence of sunny weather in our part of the country.
Any changing mole or new growth that you notice on your skin should be evaluated by your dermatologist. Dr. Lombardi has a great deal of experience in the examination of the skin. Additionally, he incorporates advanced instruments in the examination of skin lesions. Our handheld dermatoscope uses magnification and bright light to enhance our visual field to a point where we can quickly identify abnormalities in the skin.
TYPES OF SKIN LESIONS
In many cases, it is possible to identify whether a skin lesion is simply an area of pigmentation or sun damage or if it is what we call an actinic keratosis.
This form of sun damage is also referred to as AK or a precancerous lesion. Actinic keratoses may look like a small flesh-toned bump or like a tan, pink, or red mole. These growths may lie flush on the surface of the skin or they may be slightly raised. They can also vary quite a bit in size.
Touch is often the best sense to employ when identifying actinic keratosis, as lesions often have a rough texture. Sensations like a prickly feeling, tenderness or itching in a skin lesion may also indicate abnormality in the skin cells that have collected in that area.
Potentially pre-cancerous skin lesions will most often develop on an area of the body that is routinely exposed to the sun. Remember, if you have used an indoor tanning bed at any time, skin lesions may appear anywhere on the body where UV exposure has occurred.
